Christ Of Culture
Part III. In Defense of Cultural Faith
Often times critics of the form share the same general attitude
Ie fundamentalist attack on "liberalism" is itself an expression of a cultural loyalty (ie creation)-some martyrs of past cultures rather than Christianity
The acculturation of Jesus has contributed greatly in history to the extension of his power over men…
other cultures liked Christianity for how well it was in harmony with the moral and religious philosophy of their best teachers etc etc…
"..as there is no single Biblical language there is also no single Biblical cosmology or psychology"
Cultural Christians tend to address themselves to the leading groups in a society, (to the sophisticated circles etc etc.)-Missionaries to the aristocracy & Middle Class or those rising to power).
Christ of culture makes effective the universal meaning of the gospel..Jesus is the savior of the world (and not one little band).
The other-worldliness of Jesus stays mated with a this-worldly concern-not loose sight of concerns of this world
Culture Christians Make contact with culture...
i.e. The Gnostics help to keep the church from becoming a withdrawn sect
Abelard prepares the way for philosophical and scientific enlightenment
Jesus has many aspects and even caricatures sometimes call attention to features otherwise ignored. (response to argument that variance in culture makes Christ a chameleon)
Apart from Christ it is difficult to find unity (i.e. amidst different cultures & cultural values??)
